We create large format pinhole photographs of art installations & community.
Every morning we host art making workshops, offering a unique and memorable experience for burners. Participants drive around with us as we tour the breathtaking art on the playa, and take photos with our old school pinhole cameras loaded with unexposed photographic paper. The now exposed photographic paper, is then developed into one of a kind pieces of artwork. Since 1999, the pinhole project has built a darkroom in the desert, thus enabling us to gift the prints to artists and participants.
Our Pinhole Gallery
How We Do It
Pinhole photography uses simple cameras to create unique pieces of artwork. A pinhole camera can be made from any light proof container with a small hole (aka pinhole), and a shutter (e.g. a piece of gaffers tape). Pinhole photography uses long exposure times to create an inverted image onto light sensitive film or paper on the opposite side of the pinhole.
Our cameras are made from repurposed cylindrical drums, typically used to store chemicals and other materials. We have two camera sizes which produce 30x40 inch and 16x20 inch prints. Our apertures are laser cut to perfect circles providing incredibly high resolution. Photographic paper lines the inside outer edge of the drums filling over half of the circumference opposite the pinhole, providing a uniquely large field of view.
Every year we transform our shipping container into a fully functioning darkroom. Using red safe lights, the exposed paper is removed from the cameras, and sequentially submerged into large trays which hold the developer, stopper, fixer and water wash. After hang drying, the prints are archived prior to gifting. Finally, the cameras are reloaded with new unexposed paper to take out on our next workshop.
Who we are
We are a group of art-loving burners with a range of photography skills from professional photographers to novice amateurs. We are centered around a mission to embody the 10 principles of burning man while creating spectacular art and memorable experiences for all burners who visit.
